As mobile gamers are looking forward to playing Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile, it seems that the future of the franchise’s current title, Call of Duty: Mobile, is in doubt.
According to a written response from Microsoft to the UK’s Competition and Markets Authority, the popular mobile game “is expected to be phased out over time (outside of China) with the launch of Warzone Mobile.”
Warzone Mobile is set to be released later this year, and it will connect with the cross-progression system of the game’s console and PC versions. However, cross-play between Warzone Mobile and other versions of the game will not be available.
Call of Duty: Mobile, on the other hand, will likely see its demise outside of China as Warzone comes out. CODM is developed by Tencent subsidiary TiMi Studios, and has been a fan-favourite shooter since it came out in 2019.
The Call of Duty series has been a major point of contention between PlayStation and Xbox, ever since the Activision Blizzard merger was first announced.
Recently, EA announced that Apex Legends Mobile will be shut down and Battlefield Mobile’s development was cancelled. Apex Legends Mobile developer Respawn said in a statement that the game’s “content pipeline” was not matching the quality and quantity it was expected to achieve. Regarding Battlefield Mobile, EA said that it decided to take a different route with the series.
