Jaipur: For blood cancer patients, more facilities for treatment have come up in the city. Now, four centres are doing bone marrow transplant, including government-run SMS Hospital and three private hospitals.
A 53-year-old blood cancer patient was successfully treated by bone marrow transplant at a city’s hospital which was the first case of the hospital. Bhagirath Das from Ladnun in Nagaur district was suffering from a blood cancer named multiple myeloma for last few months for which he was advised chemotherapy.
The patient was counselled multiple times regarding the need of bone marrow transplant. Following his consent, he has worked up for autologous bone marrow transplant and was successfully treated by bone marrow transplant. In autologous stem cell transplant, doctors use healthy blood stem cells from the patient’s body to replace damaged bone marrow.
Dr Prakash Singh Shekhawat (Clinical Hematologist, Hemato-oncologist & BMT physician) at a private hospital, who performed it, said, “Two types of bone marrow transplant – autologous (own stem cells) and allogeneic (stem cells from someone else’s body) are done. Bone marrow transplant is indicated in various haematological and non-haematological disorders. It is used in both cancer (acute leukaemia, chronic leukaemia, multiple myeloma, lymphoma) and non-cancer conditions like, thalassemia, sickle cell anaemia, glycogen storage disorder.”
“Depending upon the disease bone marrow transplant procedure and indications are different. An autologous transplant is usually performed in diseases like relapsed refractory lymphoma (hodgkin and non hodgkin lymphoma), amyloidosis, multiple myeloma, multiple sclerosis etc. In case of multiple myeloma it is an approved indication at baseline in newly diagnosed cases and is a standard of care,” he said.
