Blue Beetle’s Second Trailer Wants to Usher in the New DCU, But Fans are Worried

Blue Beetle’s second trailer has officially arrived, offering a deeper look at what director Angel Manuel Soto has described as an “unapologetically Latino” superhero film. Jame Gunn has called Blue Beetle the first real DCU character, making it the first in a new age of DC superheroes. But will it succeed? Fans aren’t so sure.

The three-minute long trailer features recent college grad Jaime Reyes and his family as they struggle with the Scarab, a piece of alien biotechnology that grants him superhuman powers. Where the first trailer focused on how Reyes obtained the Scarab, and invited some controversy over its “Batman’s a fascist” stinger, the second trailer is a much more straightforward look at Reyes’ powers.

Fans seem positive on the new trailer, with several of them commenting on the improved CGI and the humor of Reyes’ close-knit family, including an amusing shot of Reyes’ grandmother toting what looks like an enormous alien minigun while smirking into the camera.

But the failure of the Flash, which wrapped up the previous iteration of the DCU by losing Warner Bros. some $200 million, continues to hang over Blue Beetle. Indeed, it’s been a rough year for superhero films overall, with Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania and Shazaam 2 also underperforming.

“I hope this move doesn’t flop like the other DC movies, I want to see [Blue Beetle star Xolo Maridueña] play Jaime more,” one fan wrote in a comment that had 174 upvotes.

Over on Twitter, a #bluebeetlebatallion hashtag is urging fans to support the film.

Blue Beetle was finally revealed earlier this year after a development period stretching back to 2018. It stars Xolo Maridueña as the eponymous star, with Adriana Barraza as his grandmother and Raoul Max Trujillo as Indestructible Man. It’s not part of the initial DCU arc kicking off with Superman: Legacy, but Gunn has described Blue Beetle as the “first DCU character.” Maridueña has also teased several DC cameos for the new film.
