Bend it like Blayney: Coaching or teaching, it’s all about being a team player

How has this new year of the pandemic been going so far? Are there any new challenges you face in 2022 compared to last year?

We had to shift, like everyone else, in terms of modes of delivery – which I think we did well. Flexibility was key, empowering individuals to work independently and providing the support to do so was enormous.

How transferable are your skills? Are there any other jobs you have done or that you could do using similar skills and qualifications?

I could work in other education roles and also in a business setting. The ability to work in a team environment, show strong leadership skills and overcome personal challenges has been important in my growth. Working under pressure, empowering and motivating others and being able to “read the room” all come in handy.

How was your career as a professional football player and the skills developed during that time relevant to what you do now?

My time as a professional footballer was cut short, so I’m glad I had a back-up plan! Obviously, you learn a lot about the technical aspects as a player, but also about teamwork and communication. I’ve also had several professional development opportunities on and off the pitch to develop myself to ensure a well-rounded and successful transition from player to coach.

What advice do you have for people wanting to get into this career? What should they study, and what experience do they need to get into this field?

Teaching has helped my coaching, and coaching has helped my teaching; it’s an excellent dual career scenario for those wishing to do both. It helps if you are well-supported too. I’ve got and have had some really good bosses and assisting staff. Given I have to travel with the team, that’s incredibly important.

What personal skills do they need?

High work ethic, ability to engage with all people, empathy, good time management/organisation skills and strong leadership.
