In an effort to promote the release of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty for Xbox Game Pass, Microsoft partnered with a craftsman to create a working Xbox controller made out of the mineral jade.
In a new mini-documentary video from Microsoft, we get a closer look at designer Andy Chi’s process, which involves sourcing the jade, cutting it with CNC machinery, and also using hand-polishing techniques dating back hundreds of years. In the video, Chi also discusses how working with jade isn’t such a simple thing and how he had to restart multiple times after finding cracks.
To be clear, this is a real controller that actually works, not something like the Xbox console made of sugar. Check out the video below to see how it all came together.
“I think the game is a little bit like real life. You need to challenge something. You need to conquer the difficulties,” Chi said.
According to Chi, this is the first real jade controller in the world. The controller is not for sale, and Microsoft didn’t say if it plans to give it away as part of a promotion. As for a controller you can buy, Microsoft recently launched a controller made of recycled plastics to help save the planet.
Fallen Dynasty released in March, and its new DLC–Battle of Zhongyuan–releases today, June 29.
