It is less than a month to go for two of the biggest movies of the year, Barbie and Oppenheimer, to hit theatres on 21st July. As the internet keeps the “Barbenheimer” debate alive, we have learnt about the Box Office expectations from the producers.
Barbie, Oppenheimer box office opening day predictions
According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter, Barbie producers Warner Bros., expect to open at $60 million. However, they reportedly do expect the film to have a Box Office opening of $70 to $80 million if not more, but the quoted $60 million is them playing safe.
Oppenheimer on the hand, is reportedly tracking for a Box Office opening of $40 million. And from what we know about Christopher Nolan’s track record of box office openings, the quoted $40 million is a low estimate, with movies like Interstellar grossing at $701.7 million globally. Regardless, Oppenheimer is one of those rare R-Rated movies from Christopher Nolan, which definitely limits its audience. This might end up affecting the numbers, when the movie releases on 21st July.
Mattel President was not on board with a scene from Barbie
In other news, there’s some new information about the script has surfaced. The Time magazine reports that Mattel’s COO and president Richard Dickson, was not too happy about a scene that he felt “was off-brand”.
He flew down to London to meet Gerwig and Robbie, and essentially “argue” about it. However, Gerwig and Robbie performed the scene together that ultimately made the President change his mind. Robbie said, “When you look on the page, the nuance isn’t there, the delivery isn’t there.” The trailer anyway says, “If you love Barbie, this movie is for you. If you hate Barbie, this movie is for you.” Margot Robbie adds, “If you feel indifferent about Barbie or haven’t thought about Barbie in years, this movie is also for you.”
