Following the release of Avatar: The Way of Water late last year, fans began the arduous process of inquiring about the threequel and the subsequent installments.
However, the fandom was recently met with a major blow as all three planned sequels for the films were delayed. Alongside several Marvel and Star Wars films, Disney announced that a reshuffle to its lineup of Avatar films as well.
As per the new schedule, Avatar 3 will now open in theatres on December 19, 2025, instead of the December 20, 2024. Similarly, Avatar 4 has been pushed from December 18, 2026, to December 21, 2029. Finally, Avatar 5 will now release in the next decade, as the film was postponed from its December 22, 2028, release date to December 19, 2031.
The final film’s launch will be a long way from the release of the original Avatar film, which debuted in theatres on December 18, 2009. That’s a gap of 22 years.
It also puts things into perspective about the long time that many of the actors will have to put into James Cameron’s franchise. One such actress that might be in for a long ride is Zoe Saldana, who plays Neytiri in the series.
Upon announcement of the delay, Saldana took to Instagram to voice her opinions about it. In an Instagram story, the actress pointed out that she would be 53 years old when Avatar 5 drops in theatres.
By the time the last film comes out, Saldana will have worked on the Avatar franchise for over 26 years, as filming for the first film started in 2007. That would be more than twice the amount of years that she has spent in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Gamora in the Guardians of the Galaxy series.
