Steam Deck has dominated the handheld PC market since launching in 2022. Its success seems to have inspired other major PC gaming companies to dive into the world of handhelds. Though the Steam Deck will likely be hard to top when it comes to performance for the price, Valve’s handheld will soon have a powerful big-name competitor: the Asus ROG Ally.
A Windows-based handheld gaming PC, the Asus ROG Ally is gearing up for a worldwide launch on May 11. Some details about the device are still murky (such as pricing), but you can sign up for stock notifications at Best Buy.
Pricing TBD
Asus has finally revealed official specs for the ROG Ally. We’re still waiting on a price, but here’s a look at what this handheld PC brings to the table:
- 7″ 1080p 120Hz 7ms touch display with FreeSync
- Weight: 608g
- AMD Ryzen Z1 Series CPU
- RDNA 3 Graphics
- 512GB PCI Express 4.0 SSD
- 16GB RAM
- MicroSD slot for storage expansion
- Wi-Fi 6E
- Windows 11 operating system
- Haptic feedback
- Fingerprint sensor for unlocking
While exact pricing details are yet to be announced, Asus did reveal it’ll keep the price under $1,000. The most expensive Steam Deck tops out at $650–so expect the ROG Ally to be an expensive alternative to Steam’s popular handheld, rather than a direct competitor in terms of price.
If you’re looking to snag one at launch, be sure to sign up for notifications–which only requires an email–as it’s likely quantities will be limited. The product launches on May 11 and comes bundled with three months of Game Pass Ultimate, which should be perfect for the handheld thanks to its Windows 11 operating system.
Don’t want to wait for the ROG Ally? Then consider picking up a Steam Deck, which is readily available to purchase directly from Valve. On the Windows handheld front, the Ally is joining a constantly growing market, including the very impressive and high-performing Ayaneo series of portable gaming PCs.
