The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) gave the alternative of the special exam for those students who were dissatisfied with the statistical formula-based evaluation this year.
AHSEC secretary Pulak Patgiri told TOI that out of around 2.49 lakh candidates who were registered for the cancelled Class XII board exam, around 1,800 students have applied for the special exam. “The last date for applying for the exam was August 16. Only a negligible number of students have applied for the test. This shows a very low disappointment level among the examinees,” said Patgiri.
All registered Class XII state board examinees were given a 12-day window period to apply for the special offline exam. “Mostly, those who have failed in the exam applied for the special test,” Patgiri added.
Though the number of applicants for the Class XII test is comparatively few, for the special exam of Class X, around 22,000 candidates have applied.
Board of Secondary Education Assam (Seba) chairman RC Jain said that there was no dissatisfaction among the students who passed the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Assam High Madrassa (AHM) examinations. “Only those students who failed in the Class X state board exam, have applied,” said Jain.
Sources in the education department said that both AHSEC and Seba will need special approval from the state health department to conduct the offline examinations. Getting the nod of the health department is unlikely to become a stumbling block as the government is all set to allow the reopening of schools and colleges from September.
“Both Class X and XII special exams are likely to be conducted simultaneously,” the official said.
In both HSLC and AHM examinations, a record 30% rise in the pass percentage was recorded this year. While the overall pass percentage this year has been 93.10 in HSLC, for the AHM examination it was 93.18%.
In Class XII board results, the pass percentage went up as high as 99% in three streams.
Early in July, the Assam government had cancelled the proposed special board exams after discussions were held under the chairmanship of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Representatives of various student organizations were also present. Later the two education boards and education minister Ranoj Pegu again announced that the special exams would be held to satisfy the aggrieved students.
