Sri Lanka vs Bangladesh, Asia Cup 2023 Super Four preview: The 2023 Asia Cup gears up for its first rematch with Sri Lanka taking on Bangladesh in the second Super Four clash on Saturday.

The Bangladeshis, however, produced an admirable fight back in their defence of a sub-par target, with the defending champions reduced to 15/2 followed by 43/3 before Sadeera Samarawickrama (54) and Charith Asalanka (62) brought the Lankans back on track with fighting half-centuries.

Asalanka eventually got his team over the line with 11 overs to spare in the company of captain Dasun Shanaka.

Sri Lanka posted a contrasting win against Afghanistan, where they nearly ended up suffering a knockout punch at the hands of a spirited Afghan side led by Hashmatullah Shahidi despite posting a competitive 291/8 on the board in Lahore.

Afghanistan needed to chase the target of 292 down in 37.1 overs, and despite getting reduced to 50/3 at one stage, were very much on track to chase it down thanks to a blazing fifty from Mohammad Nabi (65 off 32 balls), who was ably supported by skipper Shahidi (59 off 66) in an 80-run fifth-wicket stand.

The trio of Karim Janat (22), Najibullah Zadran (23) and Rashid Khan (27 not out) kept the Afghans in the hunt with Rashid nearly getting his team over the line, only for them to fall short by the narrowest of margins in the end.

Even more heartbreaking for them and their fans was the fact that the tail gave up after failing to get to 292 in 37.1 overs, when they could have still beaten Sri Lanka on Net Run Rate had they taken their score to 295 in 37.4 overs — either by a six or a boundary or other means.

Sri Lanka collected a two-run win, and managed to enter the Super Four stage with two wins in as many games.

The match, like all other fixtures in Colombo in the remainder of the Asia Cup, faces the threat of getting washed out with a 90 per cent of rain on Saturday according to Accuweather.

Sri Lanka had beaten Pakistan by 23 runs in the final of the 2022 edition in Dubai to win their sixth title overall as well as their first in T20Is. Bangladesh, on the other hand, are yet to win a major multi-nation even and have finished Asia Cup runners-up thrice (2012, 2016 and 2018).
