The Gurpurb came bearing good news. Prime Minister Narender Modi on Friday promised to revoke the three contentious farm laws, bringing cheer to the farmers across Punjab, Haryana and other states.

While Punjabi celebs, who had shown their support to farmers’ protests from day one hailed the decision, many resorted to memes to celebrate the news. Bollywood too reacted to this development as Friday’s trending hashtag was #FarmLawsRepealed. Here’s a follow up…

Credit to the farmers

Singers like Harf Cheema and Kanwar Grewal who were at ground zero with protesting farmers hailed this news. Harf Cheema, on his way to Germany on Saturday, took out some time to share a music video of an old song, Baba Nanak Meher Karuga, Datteya Reh Tun Jatta Ve on Instagram while congratulating Punjab Singh (state) for the win of its sons.

Himanshi Khurana, who had hit back at Kangana Ranaut for her ‘Khalistani’ remark earlier, tweeted, “Finally, victory is yours, many congratulations to all the farmers. A big gift of Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s Prakash Parv. Happy Gurpurab.” Singer Tarsem Singh Jassar in a Facebook post wrote, “I salute the courage and sacrifices of farmers. I pray for all the martyrs of this protest. It will go down in history in golden words. Congratulation to all for making this happen. #KisanMajdoorEkta Zindabad.”

Singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh, who came out with a song Dhiaan Dhar Mehsoos Kar this Gurparb, without giving much away had shared a small message on Instagram story, “Shukar Parmatma Da. Nanak Naam Chadhdi Kala, Tere Bhaane Sarbat Da Bhalla. Shukar.”

Gippy Grewal also came live on Facebook to congratulate his fans on Gurpurab and repeal of the farm laws. As Punjabis are never short of songs for any occasion, singer R Nait released a song on Friday afternoon, called Shukrana on the auspicious occasion. BJP MP and singer, Hans Raj Hans, too congratulated the farmers.

The opposing voice

Actress Kangana Ranaut, whose stance on farmer’s law was pro-establishment, wrote on her Instagram story, “Sad, shameful and absolutely unfair…” to a tweet shared by Akanksha Shandaliya, “Street power is the only power that matters, hence proved. #FarmersProtest”. She further added, “If people on the street have started to make laws and not the chosen government in Parliament then even this is a jihadi nation… Congratulations to all who wanted it like this.”

Blessing for everyone

Richa Chadha, who lent her support to farmers’ protest since the beginning, celebrated Gurpurb by wearing a green t-shirt with farmers’ picture on it, called it outfit of the day(#ootd). She captioned it, “Sarbat Da Bhalla (Blessings for everyone). Kisan Majdoor Ekta Zindabad! Art by @mirsuhail.”

The actress also replied to member of Bharitya Kisan Union as he shared the on Twitter, “Jeet Gaye Aap. Aapki Jeet Mein Sab Ki Jeet Hai.” A picture of photojournalist Danish Siddiqui, who died in July in Afghanistan also resurfaced on Twitter which showed how Kisans had celebrated Prakash Utsav of Guru Nanak last year on roads. Richa and many others had retweeted the picture.

Lessons for future

Gul Panag too wrote a long tweet to express her happiness, “Grateful to @narendramodi for repealing the Farm Laws, finally. I wish we didn’t have to let the impasse last this long, cause so many lives to be lost. And demonise, debase, delegitimise the Farm Protest and the protestors.#Farmlawsrepealed…Let this be a lesson for future governments to find the means & the will, to engage with all stake holders when bringing about reform. And also a lesson for law makers that legislative procedure can’t be circumvented by passing laws in minutes, without discussion & debate.”

Wonderful news

Actor and philanthropist Sonu Sood tweeted, “This is a wonderful news! Thank you,@narendramodiji, @PMOIndia, for taking back the farm laws. Thank you, farmers, for raising just demands through peaceful protests. Hope you will happily return to be with your families on the Parkash Purab of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji today.”

A heavy price

Actor Shruti Seth tweeted, “So many lives lost. Such a heavy price. But proud of the farmers for holding their ground, peacefully!”
