Arrested Development Will Disappear From Netflix, Including Streamer’s Original Seasons

Arrested Development is being removed from Netflix, an especially bizarre twist after the streaming platform was the one to renew the beloved comedy and produce its fourth and fifth seasons.

Variety reported the news today, and it’s also apparent on the series’ own Netflix page, where it says the last day to watch will be March 14 (screenshot below).

IGN has reached out to Netflix for comment.

Arrested Development has a long history with Netflix, starting even before it renewed the sitcom for Seasons 4 and 5. The series, starring Jason Bateman, Portia de Rossi, Will Arnett, Michael Cera, Alia Shawkat, Tony Hale, David Cross, Jeffrey Tambor, and the late Jessica Walter, aired for three critically beloved seasons on Fox before being canceled due to low viewership in 2006.

Post-cancellation, it found even more fans on Netflix, who produced its long-awaited fourth season as a Netflix Original in 2013. A two-part fifth season was released in 2018 and 2019.

If Netflix does go through with scrubbing Arrested Development as its page promises, it wouldn’t be the first time it’s removed its own original content. Last year, all of its originally produced Marvel shows were pulled from the platform – however, that’s a bit of a different situation, given that they all moved to Disney+.

Streamers pulling their own original content is something that’s become more and more common, however. Perhaps most notably, HBO Max removed more than 50 film and TV titles from its own platform, with original content accounting for much of that. And earlier this month, Paramount+ removed several original series as it prepares to merge with Showtime.
