ARC: June U.S. Air Ticket Prices Drop Again

The average price in June for a U.S. roundtrip air ticket was $555, representing an 8 percent decline year over year from $605 and a 1 percent drop month over month from $562, according to Airlines Reporting Corp.’s monthly report. It’s the third month in a row with a year-over-year decline. 

U.S. air ticket sales, however, increased 2 percent from a year prior to $8.1 billion, although that is a 10 percent drop from May 2023. Total passenger trips were up 3 percent year over year to nearly 22.3 million, representing a month-over-month decline of 8 percent. 

International trips climbed 10 percent from a year prior to nearly 8.7 million, while domestic trips fell 1 percent to more than 13.6 million. Their monthly variances were down 7 percent and 8 percent, respectively.

“Air travel’s resiliency was on full display through the first half of 2023,” said ARC chief commercial officer Steve Solomon. “Despite some economic headwinds, both business and leisure travelers showed strong demand, airlines continued to add flights, and travel agency sales continued to increase.”

June electronic miscellaneous document sales, which include fees for such ancillary products as upgraded seats and checked bags, increased 79 percent year over year to nearly $24.6 million but were down 7.8 percent from the prior month. Ancillary transactions increased 62 percent versus a year prior to more than 377,100 and were up about 6 percent month over month.
