The Apple-Epic Games legal battle has been going on since May 3 but it is yet to see Apple CEO Tim Cook coming at the forefront of the tech giant’s defence. That is set to change in the coming weeks. Phil Schiller and Craig Federighi are the next big names in Apple that have to testify during the trial at Oakland, California this week, with Cook to follow suit this week itself or the next week for which he is doing “hours of practice”, as per a report by The Wall Street Journal, based on inputs from someone familiar with the details. Cook will have to reportedly be on the stand for about 100 minutes, which clearly makes for enough time to grill the CEO of the reputed technology leviathan.
The Apple CEO is reportedly preparing for the assault of questions that will be directed at him eventually with the help of former prosecutors chosen by his legal team.
The whole issue started with Apple banning Fortnite after Epic Games introduced its own in-app purchases system in the iOS version of the game, which, as per Apple, flouts the policies of the App Store. Epic Games then dragged Apple to court. Epic Games is strongly opposed to the 30% fee charged on the Apple App Store. Epic Games CEO went on to say that monopolies like Apple need to be stopped. Apple later lowered the developer fees for those who were making less than $1 million a year.
In view of this, Apple’s App Store policy is most likely going to be targeted, which includes the 30% commission charge Apple takes from the developers who build apps for the App Store. So, how well is Tim Cook going to defend it? We will have to wait for that and see how it all pans out during the trial.
