Despite a 69% drop from its opening weekend, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania held off a strong $23 million performance by Cocaine Bear to win its second domestic weekend box office with $32.2 million.
As reported by Variety, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has now seen the biggest week-to-week drop for an MCU film and has surpassed Thor: Love and Thunder’s 67% drop to claim the unfortunate top prize. For extra context, right behind Thor: Love and Thunder sits Black Widow’s 67.8% drop and Eternals’ 62% drop.
The big drop is, in part, due to the negative reviews for the latest MCU film. While many found good parts in the film, especially Jonathan Majors’ performance as Kang the Conqueror, it just didn’t come together for a lot of people. As it stands, this third Ant-Man film has a rating of 48% on Rotten Tomatoes and sits only behind Eternals’ 47% for the entire MCU.
In our Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania review, we said it “has just enough heart, humor, and excellent performances to make up for its more underdeveloped aspects.”
Globally, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania has earned $364 million, with $167 million coming in from North America and $196 million from international theaters.
Cocaine Bear, as previously mentioned, came out roaring with an impressive opening weekend, bringing in $23 million in North America and $5.3 million overseas. Globally, the film sits at $28.4 million and is on its way to earning back its roughly $35 million budget.
In our Cocaine Bear review, we said it is “a gory, hilarious, and totally fun as hell horror comedy that maximizes its inherently absurd premise while rarely overdosing on the joke.”
Jesus Revolution took third place with $15.5 million, and it outperformed expectations by nearly doubling the $6 million to $7 million analysts thought it would make. Jesus Revolution cost $15 million and follows “a youth minister and a pastor as they partake in the evangelical Christian movement that swept Southern California in the early 1970s.”
Avatar: The Way of Water and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish rounded out the top five with $4.7 million and $4.1 million, respectively. Avatar: The Way of Water, which is now the third highest-grossing film of all time, brought its global total to a massive $2.267 billion.
The box office’s future is looking bright, as Creed III, Scream VI, Shazam: Fury of the Gods, and John Wick: Chapter 4 are all on their way soon.
