AMD Announces Ryzen Mobile CPUs With 3D V-Cache for Gaming Laptops; To Invest $400 Million in India

The Ryzen 9 7945HX3D mobile processor featuring AMD’s 3D V-Cache technology has been officially announced by the company. It is based on the Zen 4 architecture and features clock speeds up to 5.4 GHz, and has a 55W TDP package.

The Ryzen 9 7945HX3D will be available first in the Asus ROG Scar 17 gaming laptop, which will be released on August 22, 2023.

AMD’s V-Cache technology lets the company stack the cache vertically on the CPU die, making the cache size bigger without increasing the actual die size. As there will be a larger cache size, the CPU can store more data during gaming. This will eliminate the need to transfer data from RAM or SSD storage.

AMD is calling the Ryzen 9 7945HX3D as the “world’s fastest mobile gaming processor.” Despite using V-Cache, its success will still depend on other factors. Some games that heavily rely on the GPU might not run at 4K resolution.

AMD to invest in India

AMD has announced plans to invest around $400 million in India over the next five years.

The investment will be used to establish a new 500,000-square-foot design centre in Bengaluru, which will become the company’s largest design centre in the world. AMD also plans to create 3,000 new engineering jobs in India over the next five years.

The investment is a significant boost for India’s semiconductor ecosystem, as this investment will help to develop India’s capabilities in the design of semiconductor chips.

At the SemiconIndia 2023 summit in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, Mark Papermaster, AMD’s executive vice president and chief technology officer, expressed how AMD’s presence in India has expanded over the years. He mentioned that from a small group of employees in 2001, the company now has over 6,500 employees. This growth has been possible due to the solid groundwork laid by local leadership and the abundance of highly skilled talent in the region.

Mr. Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Skill Development, and Entrepreneurship, conveyed his warm welcome to AMD’s decision to establish the design centre in India and expand the India-AMD partnership. He believes that this move will play a crucial role in creating a world-class semiconductor design and innovation ecosystem. It will offer significant opportunities to the vast pool of highly skilled semiconductor engineers and researchers in India, aligning with PM Narendra Modi’s vision of India becoming a global talent hub, he said.

The new AMD campus, which will serve as a design centre in Bengaluru, is expected to open before the end of 2023. It will feature extensive lab space, “state-of-the-art collaboration tools” and “seating configurations designed to foster teamwork.”
