Amazon Games Announces Over 100 Job Cuts

The gaming division of Amazon has now been affected by the company’s mass layoff. Earlier this week, Games Vice President Christoph Hartmann wrote to the employees about the “difficult decision to eliminate just over 100 roles.” Here’s more on these developments.

As part of the mass layoffs globally taking place across tech companies, the latest affected is the gaming division of Amazon. Vice president Christoph Hartmann broke the news on April 4 over an email. It mentioned the following:

“After evaluating our current projects against our long-term goals, the Games leadership team made the difficult decision to eliminate just over 100 roles across Prime Gaming, Game Growth and in our San Diego studio, while also reassigning some employees to other projects that match our strategic focus.”

Earlier in March, Amazon had announced its plans to lay off about 9000 employees by April 2023. The 100 employees of the gaming division of Amazon seem to have lost their jobs as a part of this lay-off phase of the company.

As for Amazon Games, till date, it has developed only the online RPG New World, which eventually went on to see a decline in its users. Publishing Tripod Studio’s Lost Ark in 2022, however, did bring about some success in terms of critical acclaim for the game. The latest big update from Amazon was however the announcement of its deal with NCSoft earlier in February to publish Throne and Liberty. News of Amazon purchasing the Tomb Raider franchise also came out in February.

Future of Amazon’s Gaming division

Given this state of matters, Hartmann also mentioned in his letter that Amazon will “continue to invest” in their internal development efforts. The New World team will be expanded further with reallocation of resources into the team.

Hartmann said that Amazon’s studio in Montreal will continue expanding and is making “great progress” on its unannounced project. He also said that the San Diego studio will “double down” on the pre-production phase of their unannounced game also. This

Hartmann also wrote about expanding Amazon’s publishing efforts in the gaming division which includes their recent deal with NCSoft.
