A New Starcraft Game Is In Development At Blizzard, Insider Claims

Journalist Jez Corden, who’s accurately leaked numerous bits of gaming industry-related info in the past, stated, via a couple of one-word replies on Twitter, that Starcraft 3 was in development at Blizzard Entertainment. The tweets have since been deleted, but they were spotted beforehand by Insider Gaming and others.

Apparently as part of a Twitter AMA (Ask Me Anything), somebody asked Corden if he believed that Microsoft would revive the Starcraft franchise, were its acquisition of Activision Blizzard to go through. Corden replied that Microsoft won’t even need to do so. When asked if he was referring to Starcraft 3, Corden simply stated “Yep.” When asked if he knew anything, his answer was the same, “yep.”

It’s worth repeating that the tweets have since been deleted, which may suggest a retraction or a lack of confidence in the claim. However, it also could be that, due to some specific parameters with his source, he was not yet in a position to reveal such information. There’s obviously no way to know for sure, but, at the time, Corden’s replies seemed quite definitive.

Starcraft 2 Gameplay

Starcraft 2 released all the way back in 2010 and it was quite an impactful launch, given how popular and iconic the original 1998 title was. The game received two expansions, one in 2013, and another in 2015, as well as a single-player campaign in 2016. Since then, however, the game has been left stagnant, besides some occasional maintenance updates.

Blizzard recently released Diablo 4, another series that had gone a long time without receiving a new installment (Diablo 3 released in 2012), and the company found tremendous success with it. Diablo 4 has been one of the most popular games of the year, aptly earning over $666 million in sales five days post-launch, as per the New York Times.

Starcraft is a series known for its competitive depth and replayability, so Starcraft 2 is still played by thousands of gamers to this day. It would likely continue to be supported by its playerbase for years to come, but, given the franchise’s legacy, it’s undeniable that a completely new entry would garner a lot of attention.
