With the Nintendo Switch successor expected to launch in 2024, more rumours have started to emerge about the next Nintendo console. According to a patent filed by Nintendo in 2022, the company is exploring the idea of releasing a brand new dual-screen device. Almost like a cross between the Switch and classic handhelds like the DS and 3DS, the Nintendo patent shows a dual-screen console that can be flipped open and closed.
According to the patent discovered by Game Rant, the Switch 2 would also feature a touchscreen display on the exterior of the device, which can be used even when the console is shut.
Perhaps most exciting of all, however, are reports that the console could be split into two separate devices. The ability to split the device in two would allow for wireless play between friends.
The dual-screen set-up would potentially open the doors for Nintendo DS and 3DS backwards compatibility.
This would tie-in nicely with the company’s Online subscription service, which currently lets users play NES, SNES, Mega Drive, N64, Game Boy and Game Boy Advance titles.
Nintendo reportedly showcased the Switch successor during a behind-closed-doors event at Gamescom.
The company is said to have shown a souped up version of Breath of the Wild at the event, as well as the Matrix Awakens demo.
The Nintendo Switch 2 version of the Matrix Awakens demo – which originally released to show off Unreal Engine 5 – is said to have been running on DLSS 3.1, instead of DLSS 3.5 on the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
It’s also believed that the Nintendo Switch 2 will support Ray-tracing technology for superior lighting and shadows.
