The latest instalment in the FLCL franchise, FLCL: Grunge, has received a release date. The series will be kicking off its run on the Toonami programming block on September 9th, and a new trailer has been released to give fans a first look at the upcoming anime.

FLCL: Grunge is being directed by Hitoshi Takekiyo. The studios working behind the show are MontBlanc Pictures and Production I.G. It’s a CGI show, however, following the lives of three teenagers who have already graduated from school and are working, in a coming-of-age story. The newest Fooly Cooly show will also feature music from The Pillows.
“FLCL: Grunge is unique in the way that it is the first time where the story revolves around 3 working teenagers. Also, here at MontBlanc, the main animation tool we used is CGI, so that is a new challenge for this franchise,” director Takeyiko said.
Speaking about making FLCL in CG, he added, “We weren’t even certain if we could make FLCL in CGI that would be acceptable to everyone. Therefore, we couldn’t respond right away. We asked if we could present a test animation first. I made a CGI animation of Haruko myself and felt more confident that it could potentially work! That’s when we decided to take on the offer.”
