The world of Jujutsu Kaisen has multiple powerful families that influence Jujutsu society. These families are both powerful in terms of cursed techniques and influence. One of these prominent families in the series is the Zenin Clan, which Maki was a part of.
While Maki is a recurring character throughout the show’s first season, Season 2 quickly introduces Toji, who has changed his last name from Zenin to Fushiguro. Having the same original last name as Maki indicates both of their connection to the Zenin Clan,
Toji and Maki are actually cousins, with Toji being a few years older. Toji and Maki’s fathers are brothers, both sons of the current head of the Zenin family. Despite this relationship, Toji left the Zenin clan at a young age, possibly even before Maki’s birth, leading to the two never meeting.
While the two are cousins and haven’t met, they have a lot in common beyond just being born into the Zenin Clan. They were both born without the ability to properly wield Cursed Energy, which leads to them begin looked down on by the rest of the Clan. This scrutiny eventually leads both of them to leave the Clan and forge their own path in the Jujutsu Society.
What Is The Zenin Clan
The Zenin Clan is one of the most prominent families in the Jujutsu Society. They value Cursed Techniques above all else and will disown those who are unable to live up to the legacy of the family. The Zenin Clan has so much influence that it is shown they have the ability to block Maki’s promotion within Jujutsu High simply for their personal grudge and not based on her abilities. The family also has the hereditary Ten-Shadows Technique, which is arguably one of the strongest techniques ever. Their praise of power and this cursed technique leads the Clan to pay top dollar to reintroduce Megami to the Clan, despite the actions and legacy his father created after leaving.
