For the past few months, rumours have swirled on the internet about Sony potentially unveiling a new PlayStation 5.
The new model in question reportedly has a detachable disc drive, alongside a new chassis, which reduces the console’s weight. While not much is known about the disc drive, it’s been rumoured that players can buy it separately or with a bundle as well.
Since the early reports, news about this new PlayStation 5 model died down. However, rumours about the model have now sprung up again, thanks to a new Sony patent.
According to Insider Gaming (via SegmentNext), the Japanese tech giants have filed a patent for a new optical disc drive. The patent details that it can be mounted in “electronic equipment such as a game machine, personal computer, or audio-visual (AV) equipment.”
While the patent for the disc drive belongs to Sony, the details don’t provide any indication for the system to be used alongside a PlayStation 5. However, reports regarding the production of the new PS5 models with the detachable disc drive beginning this month suggests the patent’s connected to the latest iteration of the popular Sony console.
Insider Gaming sources have also further revealed that with production of the new console beginning this month, fans can soon expect the new model to make its way to retailers in September.
At the moment, Sony and PlayStation have yet to divulge any details or announcements regarding the rumoured PS5 with detachable disc drive.
