Scream 6 Creators Working on a New Horror Film Akin to The Invisible Man and Renfield

The filmmaking team behind Scream and Scream VI are working on a new Universal monster movie akin to The Invisible Man and Renfield.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the filmmaking collective known as Radio Silence has signed on to direct and produce a new monster movie for Universal. The group’s Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett will direct the as-yet-untitled project, with Chad Villella producing.

The report notes that, at one time, the project went by the title of Dracula’s Daughter. The plot apparently centered around “a group of kidnappers who abduct a band of young people, one of whom ends up being the titular character. Woe then befalls the kidnappers.”

The project is said to offer “a unique take on legendary monster lore” in the same vein as Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man and Chris McKay’s Renfield, with a script written by Stephen Shields and revisions provided by Guy Busick — a frequent Radio Silence collaborator.

Scream movie collaborators William Sherak, Paul Neinstein, and James Vanderbilt of Project X Entertainment will also serve as producers on the upcoming film alongside Tripp Vinson, who previously worked with Radio Silence on the 2019 horror-comedy hit Ready or Not.

Universal shelved its plans for a Monsterverse aka The Dark Universe after the Tom Cruise reboot of The Mummy flopped back in 2017. However, the studio later found success with the release of The Invisible Man in 2020, which earned $98.3 million on a budget of $7 million.

After that, the studio shifted focus and searched for new ways to celebrate the classic characters in its monster portfolio. Among these projects, there’s a Ryan Gosling-led Wolfman movie as well as a tale about Dracula’s loyal servant Renfield, coming to theaters on April 14.
