MUMBAI: State government on Monday told Bombay high court that a date for the common entrance test (CET) for junior college admission will be notified only after the SSC exams results are declared.
It responded to a query from a bench of Justices Ramesh Dhanuka and Riyaz Chagla on a petition by ICSE student Ananya Patki of IES Orion School, Dadar to quash the May 28 notification that declares “admissions to standard XI/ junior college in Maharashtra will be based on CET which in turn will be based solely only on the syllabus of SSC board.”
Her father advocate Yogesh Patki submitted that on June 24 the syllabus for CET was notified and it informs that it will be held by July end or August first week. He said there are 16 lakh SSC and 4 lakh ICSE/CBSE students and CET will be conducted offline. “This is complete discrimination. I’m in no position to appear in the CET,” Patki said. He said students who appear at CET will be given first preference for admissions. Patki urged the court to stay the May 28 notification saying Ananya will be gravely prejudiced. “If I get 92 % and because I don’t give CET, I will have to go to Thane, Kalyan, Dombivli colleges,” he added.
Asked by the judges when the CET will be held, the State’s advocate Jyoti Chavan said the exact date is not decided. “Unless SSC results are declared we can’t declare the CET date,” she said, adding that it may be conducted not earlier than August first week.
The judges, in their order, noted that in view of Chavan’s statement at this stage they are not inclined to grant temporary relief of stay. Posting the hearing on July 22 they directed the State to reply dealing with the issues raised in the petition.
