It’s been nearly five years since Disney announced its live-action remake of the classic Lilo & Stitch, and now, it seems the movie’s cast and crew is finally coming together.
Zach Galifianakis, known for his role in The Hangover, is now set to star in the live-action remake, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Disney hasn’t yet revealed his role and is still searching for actors to play Lilo and her older sister.
Dean Fleischer Camp, who recently directed Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, is also now attached to direct the live-action remake after Disney reportedly negotiated with Jon M. Chu to direct the project in late 2020.
With a script by Chris Kekaniokalani Bright, the Lilo & Stitch remake once again follows the story of Lilo, a young Hawaiian girl who forms a bond with an alien creature named Stitch against the wishes of humans and aliens alike.
While not much else is known about the movie’s cast and crew, Disney previously revealed the remake will premiere on Disney+. The remake was initially slated to begin filming in 2020, but faced delays and now doesn’t have a clear release window.
We gave the original Lilo & Stitch a 7 in our 2002 review, praising its 2D animation and bold storytelling.
