Meta took a big step forward with its vision for Virtual Reality, with the launch of its latest headset in the Meta Quest Pro.
The latest VR system was announced during yesterday’s Meta Connect 2022 event, and the headset comes with some of the best features available in the sector. However, it comes along with a big price tag, as the company has retailed the product at $1499, when it releases on October 25. This is a stark difference to the company’s other headset in the Meta Quest 2, which currently starts at $399.
The price difference is largely caused by the vast difference in the hardware capabilities of the Quest Pro and the Quest 2.
The Meta Quest Pro is the first-ever device to be powered by Snapdragon’s XR2+ platform, and the company claims the headset to have a 50% performance improvement compared to the Quest 2. The displays have also been upgraded massively, with the headsets offering more pixels per inch, pixels per degree and more.
The Quest Pro also features the Touch Pro controllers, which comes with built-in sensors that track the position of the controllers in a 3D space, independent of the headset. This allows for a 360-degree range of motion.
Unlike the Meta Quest 2, which primarily caters to gamers, the Quest Pro seems to be targeting a different demographic in business customers, who might be looking to upgrade working environments with the help of virtual reality.
Instead of gaming competitors like the Valve Index or the PlayStation VR series, the Meta Quest Pro seems to be going against the likes of Microsoft’s HoloLens 2, which has a whopping price tag of $3500.
If gaming is truly the customer’s need, then Meta is already offering a brilliant system in the Meta Quest 2. Other than the Quest 2, the Valve Index at $999 or the upcoming PlayStation VR2 might be a shout as well. A cheaper alternative like the HP Reverb G2 is also a great pickup at $349.
