For months now there have been rumours about Apple pulling the plug on one of the 2020 iPhones. Now, another report suggests that iPhone 12 mini may have reached the end of the road. According to a report by TrendForce, the iPhone 12 mini may have reached “end-of-life ahead of the in 2021.” This means that Apple could stop the production of its smallest iPhone. TrendForce says that the iPhone 12 mini has “suffered disappointing sales performances compared to other models in the iPhone 12 family.”
Further, Apple is expected to focus on driving sales of the three non-mini models in the iPhone 12 series in 2021. TrendForce expects the latest iPhone devices to account for about 39% of Apple’s total annual production volume for 2021. As all iPhone 12 handsets contain 5G modems, the share of 5G models in the overall iPhone production is projected to expand massively from 39% in 2020 to 75% in 2021, noted TrendForce.
In February this year, JP Morgan supply chain analyst William Yang revised its 2021 iPhone build plan mix with a major impact on iPhone 12 mini. Yang noted that given the seemingly weak demand for the iPhone 12 mini, the supply chain may stop producing it by the second quarter of 2021.
Considering that the iPhone 12 is still doing quite well as per Yang, it might be that the size is a problem. With smartphones becoming the one-stop-shop for everything — from consuming content to editing docs — the iPhone 12 mini’s size could be a factor. The other factor could be the battery performance — being a small phone the mini has a smaller battery, which doesn’t last long.
