Electronics and IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw during his visit to IIT Bhubaneswar on Sunday handed over the approval letter to the authorities of the institution for the implementation of the project proposal titled, ‘Energy efficient mesh architecture based indigenous neuromorphic processor for extreme edge IoT applications’.
Besides sanctioning the five-year project, he announced the establishment of a center named Chips to Startup (C2S) at IIT Bhubaneswar. This IIT became the 31st institute of the country to get this honour of chip designing and manufacturing, said the official sources.
“Semiconductor journey begins for Bhubaneswar. Today IIT Bhubaneswar joins PM Narendra Modi’s semiconductor mission,” said the Union minister here on Sunday.
Objective of the C2S programme is to train 85,000 high-quality and qualified engineers in the area of very large-scale integration (VLSI) and Embedded System Design. It will also help in developing 175 application specific integrated circuits (ASICs), working prototypes of 20 system on chips (SoC) and IP core repository over a period of five years.
Official sources from the national institute said chips are widely used in mobiles, computers, gaming consoles, cars, medical equipment and other electronics devices. It has integrated circuits (ICs). Semiconductor material is used to make chips. “Under this programme, we will design chips. If we get facilities and favourable conditions here, we can also manufacture this in future,” said a professor of the institution.
He said the C2S programme will address the issues related to quality manpower training, research and development, hardware IPs design, system design, application-oriented research and development and prototype design.
A few months ago, this national institute had designed and developed low power semiconductor chips which can be used in audio applications of electronic devices.
