Russian director Andrey Shalopa calls boycott of Russian culture unfortunate

Since the conflict between Russia and Ukraine erupted, there have been calls to boycott everything related to Russia — including cinema. The Cannes Film Festival recently announced that no Russian delegations or anyone associated with their government would be allowed to attend its 2022 edition in May.

Russian filmmaker Andrey Shalopa feels deeply saddended by the news, stating that it would only increase hostility.

“This is unfortunate. I think the boycott of Russian culture is stupidity that demonstrates flawed thinking,” Shalopa tells us, adding, “These are just the words of short-sighted politicians. In reality, no culture can be boycotted, including Russian.”

The debate over whether films from Russia should be screened in film festivals is gathering steam and dividing the international community in the entertainment sphere, amid escalating dispute between the two countries.

And Shalopa, best known for the film Panfilov’s 28 Men (2016), which he brought to India atthe International Film Festival in 2017, is perplexed as to why the filmmakers are paying the price.

“In Russia, absolutely everyone wants to stop the war. I don’t know anyone who wants war. There are no bad nations in the world. I urge people all over the world not to demonize any nation under any circumstances. In situations like this, avoid being convinced that you are right. Leave room for doubt. Ask yourself: “What do I know and why do I think I know it?” Avoid hatred. Stay human,” he says.

The filmmaker adds, “I am extremely upset that political differences have led to a direct military confrontation in Ukraine. This is a country that we consider part of our world. And the Ukrainian people are part of our ethnicity.”

he 50-year-old concludes with a positive message: “Lets stay connected! Let’s share culture! Let’s make the world a better place together.”
