PUNE: The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) has decided to terminate contracts of all coaches. The message was conveyed to 24 national junior and senior coaches via email.
The federation’s decision is a follow-up of the review done a few weeks ago. NRAI had decided not to renew contracts of their foreign coaches, Smirnov Pavel (pistol) and Oleg Mikhailov (rifle) after the Tokyo Games. TOI tried to speak to a few coaches, but no one was willing to talk about the mail.
NRAI had conducted review meetings with all coaches after the dismal show of Indian shooters at the Tokyo Olympics. “Yes, we have terminated contracts of all coaches and the decision has been taken after a thorough review of their performance during the past few years,” NRAI’s new secretary general Kanwar Sultan Singh told TOI. The secretary general said the federation will start the process to hire coaches soon. “We have to consider a lot of factors while hiring the coaches. It is no longer only about technical skills. It is much more than that and we have felt the need for having coaches who can pass on things other than skills. Things like mental training, confidence building and overall conduct will be desired from the coaches,” he said.
The NRAI has around two months to hire new coaches before international tournaments begin. When asked if the coaches, whose contracts have been terminated, will be eligible to apply for the positions again, the secretary general said: “We will be setting new parameters to hire the coaches and if they fit the bill, they can re-apply. The selection would be subject to them clearing the eligibility criteria. Also, the appointments will be done only after consultation with the Sports Authority of India (SAI),” he added.
Sultan Singh also said that the federation is contemplating hiring a high-performance director, and the federation is also open to hiring foreign coaches. “The same eligibility criteria will be applied to the foreign coaches too.”
