BHUBANESWAR: The matriculation pass percentage made a quantum jump of more than 19% compared to last year’s as the Board of Secondary Education (BSE), Odisha declared results on Friday on the basis of alternative assessment criteria for the first time. Of the 5,74,125 students who had registered, 5,62,010 students including 2,80,351 boys and 2,81,658 girls cleared the annual high school certificate examination, school and mass education minister Samir Ranjan Dash said.

Like last year, girls did comparatively better registering a pass percentage of 98.62% compared to boys’ 97.16%. Among the top scorers also girls outshone boys. There are 1402 girls in the A1 category compared to 1254 boys.

While 7703 students failed the examination, 4412 were marked ‘absent.’ BSE President, Ramashis Hazra said students who did not appear past examinations (Class IX half-yearly, annual, and Class X practice tests) on the basis of which evaluation was done were marked absent.

The board has given 40% weightage to class IX and 60% weightage to Class X while schools’ last four years’ performance were analysed and used for awarding grading of the students.

Among the ex-regular category (who had unsuccessfully appeared in the examination in the past), 47060 of 53279 who appeared passed the examination (88%). “This is an unprecedented situation. We have tried to ensure that the results are in favour of students,” said the BSE president.

Students had a mixed reaction. “I had set a target to secure more than 75% marks in the matriculation exam when I was promoted to Class-X from Class-IX. And I have secured 460 out of 600, which is 77% of the total mark. I am happy with the mark, said Chandan Mohapatra, a student in Sambalpur district.

Another student in Bhubaneswar, Chandini Sahu, however, said, “I had made very good preparation for the matriculation exam and would have secured more than the 348 marks awarded had an examination been conducted.”

Those not happy with the result, absentees, students pursuing studies in correspondence mode, and open schooling can appear an examination to be conducted by the board when the situation becomes conducive. The examination process will be notified shortly. The form fill-up may start by July 5, Hazra said.
