  • Pakistan have taken a 1-0 lead in the 3-match T20I series

Pakistan continue to impress in the shortest format of the game as they survived a scare against Bangladesh in the first of a 3-match T20I series in Dhaka on Friday. Led by lower-order heroics from Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz, Pakistan gunned down a 128-run target after a top-order wobble at the Shere-e-Bangla Stadium where fans returned to watch the action from the stands.

Chasing 128, Pakistan were jolted early by Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed as they removed captain Babar Azam (7) and in-form opener Mohammad Rizwan (11). Haider Ali and Shoaib Malik departed for 0 as Pakistan slipped to 24/4 at the end of the powerplay on a two-paced pitch in Dhaka.

However, Fakhar Zaman and Khushdil Shah kept Pakistan’s hopes alive as they steadied the innings before switching gears after the 10th over. The duo added 56 runs for the 5th wicket before Taskin Ahmed struck to remove Fakhar in the 15th over. Pakistan were dealt a big blow as Shoriful Islam got Khushdil with a wide one that the left-hander edged to the wicketkeeper.

Just when it looked like Pakistan’s chances were done and dusted, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz hit 4 sixes and 2 boundaries between them as they collected 15 runs from the 18th and the 19th over.

Shadab took Pakistan over the finish line in style with a six in the 2nd delivery of the final over as Pakistan won with 4 balls to spare.

Hasan Ali shines after T20 World Cup disappointment

Earlier in the day, Hasan Ali put behind the disappointment of the T20 World Cup semi-final to pick up 3 wickets. Mohammad Wasim Jr picked up 2 wickets while Nawaz and Shadab picked up a wicket each.

“A pleasant moment for me to win this award. My performance wasn’t up to the mark in the WC. As a professional player, ups and downs will come,” Ali, who was named the Player of the Match, said.

Bangladesh came up with a disappointing batting effort after winning the toss and opting to bat. Afif Hossain top-scored with 36 while Mahedi Hasan helped them post a total in excess of 120 with a 20-ball 30 towards the end.

The two teams will play the 2nd T20I in Dhaka on Saturday as Pakistan have a chance to seal an unbeatable 2-0 lead.
