Will BCCI increase domestic fees this year? | Cricket News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Already facing heat for dragging its feet on announcing compensation packages for domestic cricketers for the last season, Indian cricket board (BCCI) will now have to think about compensating for a shortened Ranji Trophy this season.
According to sources, the board is feeling the pressure to increase the fees of the domestic players this year to make up for the crunched season. During a Ranji Trophy, each team plays at least eight league games. But the board has decided to make six groups instead of four this season. This would mean that teams will get three less games a season. A player (who plays the entire season) is slated to lose around Rs 7.5 lakhs (including the gross revenue share).
The board had formed a committee on June 20 to devise a mechanism so that the domestic players are compensated for the curtailed last season.
TOI has learnt that the board is now looking at a plan that could compensate the players for both seasons.
“Increasing the fees of the domestic players is definitely an option. The committee will now consider that too. The board has been working on ways to increase the fees for a couple of years,” a top BCCI official told TOI.
BCCI president Sourav Ganguly has been vocal about the need to increase the fees of the domestic players ever since he assumed office in October 2019. The plans got hit because of the financial structure of the board which was suffering from heavy taxes levied on it.
It will be interesting to see if the board finally brings in a hike in domestic fees now.
Women’s T20 Challenge all but shelved
In another development, the Women’s T20 Challenge is most likely to be shelved for this year. The tournament, which is played between three teams, is usually played during the business end of the IPL.
However, with the IPL being completed in UAE in September-October this year, there is no window to fit in the tournament.
