What’s inside the ‘fashion library’ of a former Vogue editor

What are three essential items in your wardrobe? My jewellery, an Axel Mano straw hat and a pashmina. I have a pashmina library; every colour, collected over the years from India and all around the world. I love the layering of them. You can tie them in so many ways, change the look of a dress.

Do you have favourite jewellery pieces? I always wear three or four long necklaces at once; I mix them to tell a story. I love Tabito, they rescue artefacts and old machinery parts and make them into jewellery. Also, my Georg Jensen “Vivianna” bangle watch, which I’ve worn since I was 20.

Can you remember a favourite outfit from when you were a child? A Noddy outfit my mother made for me to wear to a party when I was six. The thing I always wanted was black patent leather shoes, but I wasn’t allowed them because they’d show my underpants. My mother bought me green suede shoes instead – they were gorgeous.

What was your first fashion moment? After I left school, I studied dress design at East Sydney Tech and that first drawing was seminal for me.

And your worst fashion mistake? Wearing high heels. They give you arthritis.

Is there anything you would never wear? Lycra.

Is there a current fashion trend you like? Yes, that personal style trumps trends. Individuality is what it’s all about. The French and Italians have done it for years – they’re the masters.

What shoes do you wear most often? Saltwater Sandals in summer. Again, I have a library of those. Spring Court sneakers, which I have in almost all their colours – they’re so soft they’re addictive. In winter, I wear red lace-up boots by Japanese firm Sisam, from The Maker in Hobart.

Who’s your favourite fashion icon? Audrey Hepburn, for her pure elegance and her sophistication – in the true sense of the word.

What’s your favourite off-duty, casual Sunday look? The same as any other day – a linen skirt and top or a loose linen dress.
