Twitter to counter App Store fees by charging $11 for Twitter Blue subscription on iOS | Digit

Following the launch of Twitter’s new subscription-based plan called Twitter Blue, it allowed users to get a verified symbol on their profile. The service charged the users $7.99 per month. But after Twitter’s falling off with Apple, and Apple attaching a fee on Twitter on the App Store, the company will now be charging $11 in order to offset the App Store prices.

In a report by The Information, the subscription service will cost $7 per month if purchased from the web but will be more expensive on iOS to counter the fees on Apple’s App Store.

Why The Fight With Apple?

Twitter owner Elon Musk recently went on a fight against Apple because they paused advertisements on Twitter, and accused them of hating “free speech in America”. Elon Musk also went on ahead and accused Apple of threatening to “withhold Twitter from its App Store”.

Musk recently met Tim Cook and took a tour of Apple’s Cupertino campus, and after this, things were peaceful between the two parties. Musk even tweeted about this. In the tweet, Musk said that after talking with Cook, they sorted things out and that Cook had no intention to kick Twitter off the App Store.

Not a Fan of App Store Fees

Musk was not very fond of the fees on Apple App Store. He described the fees as a “secret tax” that was levied by Apple. But this is not the first time Musk has raised his concerns regarding the deeds done by the App Store. In 2021, Musk even sided with Epic Games in their fight against Apple, and called these fees “a de facto global tax on the internet”.

No matter what the companies do, if they want to be on the App Store, they have to play by their rules.
