Twitter suspends Kangana Ranaut’s account on charges of inciting hate and violence with her tweet

Sheetal

On Tuesday, Twitter suspended Kangana Ranaut’s account over her tweet and cited, ‘hateful conduct and abusive behavior’ as the reason. We look at the reactions on the same and bring a list of suspensions that happened in the past on Twitter.

The policy

To our surprise, she is permanently barred from using the social networking site. Kangana has been a repeat offender. Known for her inflammatory and controversial tweets, she had posted several messages post Mamata Banerjee’s win in West Bengal. She had also posted about incidents of post-poll violence and called the Prime Minister to enforce President’s rule in the state. She blamed Banerjee for the violence and used offensive language.

According to Twitter’s abusive behaviour policy, the account holders cannot engage in the targeted harassment of someone, or incite other people to do so. Abusive behaviour is considered to be an attempt to harass, intimidate, or silence someone else’s voice. As a part of the action, Twitter notifies the account holder concerned about the suspension, explains which policy the person has violated and which content was in violation.

Terms and conditions

A Twitter’s spokesperson says, “We’ve been clear that we will take strong enforcement action on behaviour that has the potential to lead to offline harm. The referenced account has been permanently suspended for repeated violations of Twitter rules, specifically our Hateful Conduct policy and Abusive Behaviour policy. We enforce the Twitter rules judiciously and impartially for everyone on our service.”

No loss

Kangana says she ‘suffers no loss’ because of the suspension. Her statement reads, “Twitter has only proved my point that they are Americans and by birth, a white person feels entitled to enslave a brown person, they want to tell you what to think, speak or do. Fortunately, I have many platforms I can use to raise my voice, including my own art in the form of cinema, but my heart goes out to the people of this nation who have been tortured, enslaved and censored for thousands of years and still there is no end to the suffering.

The celeb reaction

After the ban

Fashion and textile designer Anand Bhushan declares on his official handle that he would not work with Ranaut. He writes, “In view of certain events today, we have taken a decision to remove all collaboration images with Kangana Ranaut from our social media channels. We also pledge never to be associated with her in any capacity in the future.”

There’s a right way

“Pleasantly surprised to see this! Kudos to you @AnandBhushan& #RimzimDadu for calling out hate speech and incitement to genocide in a direct manner! Stand tall you guys!,” says Swara Bhasker while supporting Anand Bhushan’s decision.
