Trails Into Reverie: 10 Tips & Tricks For Beginners

The Legend of Heroes can be an intimidating franchise to leap into. The long-running story, vast amount of characters, and decade worth of content certainly may scare away a few players. All hope is not lost, however, if Trails Into Reverie is the first game in the series to be played.

In fact, the entire Trails series of The Legend of Heroes games are built to be playable without having had to play the previous entries. Still, diving head first into the eleventh title in the series comes with a few caveats, but there are plenty of tips and tricks to help new players through any growing pains.

10 Catch Up On The Story Thus Far

While it is certainly true that new players do not need to play the previous entries in the Trails saga, learning about the events of the previous games and arcs will help put the content of Trails Into Reverie into perspective.

Fortunately, players have access to the entire backstory, beginning with the Liberl arc, transcribed in a series of ‘books’ that can be accessed from the main menu. Catching up on the story should help newcomers learn about the three main protagonists and how the continent of Zemuria has been affected by the previous entries.

9 It Is Okay To Lower The Difficulty

Battles in the Trails games are turn based at heart but often feature some pretty difficult battles. While Trails Into Reverie afford players a plethora of new combat capabilities, the combat sequences can still wipe inexperienced players without much trouble.

After falling to an enemy, the game prompts the player to lower the difficulty if needed, which effectively weakens whichever enemy downed the player and all future battles. This costs nothing to do, and if playing on normal mode, should not damage trophy potentials. Some bosses will simply stomp the player, so the option may always seem appealing and will definitely be beneficial to success.

8 Dodge & Counter… A Lot

Dodging incoming enemy attacks is a fine way to score bonus critical hits in combat, effectively earning BP for the party while dealing a bit of extra damage. BP can be used in a few ways, and fighting without it is inadvisable. BP can be utilized to issue battle orders, which range from healing the party to reducing delays, but it can also be used to issue follow-up attacks and team assaults.

Both deal increased damage to the enemy, with the team attacks also smashing away chunks of stagger bars. There will be plenty of evasion increasing items, and it is recommended to equip them to characters like Kurt, who already start with high evasion.

7 Use BP Early & Often

One of the biggest mistakes in the Trails series is underutilizing BP. Sure, team attacks that eat up 4 BP are desirable, but sometimes a solid follow-up attack will do the trick. Additionally, orders are designed to offer significant assistance to the player’s active party.

If a high evasion character is in the party and counters for critical hits often, replenishing BP should not be too difficult a feat for most players to accomplish. In most cases, the team will replenish BP quick enough for the player to effectively use it however they please.

6 Expect To Be Defeated

This one goes hand-in-hand with the earlier entry on lowering the difficulty. Players brand new to the Trails series will most likely struggle to conquer some bosses, particularly early on in the game. Trails Into Reverie provides a new game plus mode for those players who want to up the ante in difficulty, so utilize the first playthrough as a means to learning the ropes of combat. While turn-based systems may seem like an easy concept to grasp, the Trails mechanics have multiple moving parts in each that may take a number of battles to understand.

Trails Into Reverie is also the most boss-heavy entry in the series, so there is sometimes little room for error. Fortunately, proper team composition will help, and if the game over screen does appear, the retry button allows players to start at the beginning of battle and not at the previous save file.

5 Upgrade Orbal Slots, Orbments, & Weapons

Complacency in a Trails game will lead to unnecessary difficulties, particularly when it comes to orbments and orbal slots. Players will acquire an excess of U-Material, which is used to upgrade weapons, so it is important to remember to do so. With that said, there is not much of an explanation on orbments and orbal slots outside of any initial tutorials. The amount of high-power quartzes the player will inevitably find during the story and reverie corridor sequences can be a huge boon to combat.

Save up all the sepith (elemental currency, so to speak)from battle and upgrade the appropriate slots to level three on the main party’s orbal gear. In particular, quartz that offers both enormous statistical boosts while allowing characters to cast powerful arts are super useful and should be slotted as soon as possible.

4 Avoid Spoilers

Avoiding spoilers is a challenge for most games in the modern day of internet technology. The Trails saga provides players with some of the most intriguing stories in gaming — and particularly RPG — history. Trails Into Reverie is loaded with the most twists and turns and mysteries outside of maybe the first Trails of Cold Steel.

It may be hard to resist searching for the answers to some of the most burning questions. Let the story play out and enjoy the intrigue and surprises, and then allow those surprises to turn into more mysteries.

3 Learning When To ‘Turtle’ Or Go All Out

As mentioned earlier, combat in Trails Into Reverie is a complex system. Many scenarios string boss battles together, and those battles can either be slugfests or chess matches. Gauge the enemy, understand their weaknesses, and decide whether a healing-heavy or combat-heavy approach should be taken.

In many cases, a balanced approach will win the day, albeit after many turns. Some battles, however, will require heavy healing or, inversely, the ability to dole out significant damage over a specified number of turns. Likewise, some boss battles require the player to deplete a health bar to a designated level to claim victory, and it is in those situations where focused and constant damage should be dished out.

2 Stock Up On Healing Items

It cannot be stressed enough how important stocking up on healing items will be. Even for veteran players, one can never have enough Curia Tablets, health restoring items, and resurrection items. Curia tablets will be found in bulk on the journey throughout Zemuria, but it is advisable to carry 10-20 or more of each healing item that can be purchased.

It may not be uncommon to require a dozen resurrection items and a slew of potions during difficult boss battles, so engaging them prepared is a must. It could make the difference between victory or defeat at almost every turn.

1 Learn To Use The New Union System

Brand new to Trails Into Reverie is the union system. In the bottom right corner of the screen will be purple assault gauges when in combat or in a combat zone. Pressing R2 when preparing to engage an enemy will unleash a strong blast that will stun enemies for three turns when the battle starts (this does not work on boss enemies nor the ones the game marks as ‘powerful’ enemies). It is recommended to use R2 before every regular battle, as the assault gauges are refilled by attacking and defeating enemies but also recharges extremely quickly when destroying crates or vases on the maps.

During combat, however, the team can drain a full bar of the assault gauge when using the new union system. There are three ways to use them: to heal, team up for a massive melee attack, or team up for a massive arts attack. Each has its own benefits unique to each battle, but the heal union ability will provide massive health to the team while erasing negative status effects. The offensive union attacks will provide ample damage against most enemies and will definitely help topple bosses quicker. Use them as necessary.
