Spider-Man star Tom Holland says he learned how to handle tough times as a Spurs fan.
During an interview with Unilad, the young British actor explained how being a Tottenham Hotspur supporter prepared him to deal with bad reviews for his recent Apple TV+ series, The Crowded Room.
“I think being a Tottenham fan is somewhat like being in The Crowded Room,” he said. “It has taught me resilience. Tottenham has never won anything and supporting them is incredibly difficult.”
To say The Crowded Room has not been reviewed well would be… an understatement.
“It’s no secret my show has been so horribly reviewed,” he said. “But I’m here today to promote the show and I’m still here. I’m very resilient. It’s a good quality.”
The show currently has a critics rating of just 31% on Rotten Tomatoes, with some calling it “an unwatchable mess” while others call it a “laughably poor murder mystery.”
The parallel with Tottenham Hotspur is obvious to anyone who’s been a fan – the Premier League soccer club has had its fair share of ups and downs, most recently losing its former manager Antonio Conte back in March who departed after leaving some choice words for the players.
Still, most English football clubs have similar stories at one time or another, but for Holland, it’s these ups and downs that prepared him for rejection as an actor.
I’m sure taking a year off from acting will help, too, revealing in a recent interview that The Crowded Room “did break [him].”
Still, it’s not all bad – The Crowded Room currently sits on an audience rating of 89%… down from 94% when the Unilad interview took place.
“I would like to say a massive thank you to my fans, and the people that have seen the show because we’re at 94% [user rating] on Rotten Tomatoes,” Holland said at the time. “I feel so grateful that I have a wonderful community of people that support me and are there for me, so I’m honored and really excited for the rest of the show to come out.”
