Tim Paine’s wife Bonnie said that while she felt “betrayed” and “hurt” by her husband sending lewd text messages to a co-worker in Cricket Tasmania in 2017, the couple had put the matter to bed a long time back and she is just frustrated that it has now been aired in public.

Paine announced his resignation as Australia’s Test captain after the text messages, which were sent in 2017, came out in the open this month.

“I felt betrayed, and I felt hurt, upset, and I felt pissed off, I also had feelings of gratitude because he was being so honest with me,” Paine’s wife told News Corp in an interview alongside her husband.

“I have had my time of getting angry, and venting, and to get upset, and we fought and we talked, and then we both decided to move on with life, and do it together,” she said.

The messages before Paine made his comeback into the Australian Test team. A year after he was exonerated by a Cricket Australia integrity review, the wicketkeeper was made the Test team’s captain and had been projected as the harbinger of a new and improved team culture. His ascendancy to captaincy came after Steve Smith was sacked in the wake of the 2018 ball tampering scandal.

“I feel a bit frustrated that it’s all been brought up and aired in the public when we’d put it to bed years ago. I have moved forward since then. I feel like there is a lot of injustice for it being dragged out again,” Paine’s wife further said.

Cricket authorities have said the woman complained to them about Paine’s texting only after she was charged with theft in the wake of resigning from her job. Paine’s “interaction” with the woman was “consensual, private, occurred on the one occasion only … and was not repeated,” Cricket Tasmania said.

Cricket Australia’s decision not to publicly disclose the investigation was heavily criticised in the Australian media with pundits suggesting the body had prioritised brand management over integrity.
