Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is working on another video game movie. During an interview with Men’s Journal, the 49-year-old former professional wrestler revealed that he’s set to star in another video game adaptation.
“I can’t tell you which game in particular we’re doing, but there will be an announcement this year,” he said. “We’re going to bring one of the biggest, most badass games to the screen — one that I’ve played for years.”
Of course, Johnson is no stranger to video game movies. He previously starred in Doom – the 2005 big-screen adaptation of the classic FPS franchise. But Doom wasn’t exactly a huge hit. Far from it. Critically derided, it stands at just 18% on Rotten Tomatoes and earned a rubbish $58.7 million at the box office, failing to even earn back its budget.
Johnson has also starred in Rampage, the 2018 monster movie based on the classic Midway Games title. Not to mention the video game based Jumanji reboot and its subsequent sequel, Jumanji: The Next Level.
But Johnson promises that this is one video game adaptation gamers are going to love.
“I’m really excited to bring it to fans around the world,” he added. “Of course, we’re going to do right by our gamer friends — but really we’re just going to make a great movie.”
If you’re wondering what games The Rock likes to play himself, it turns out he’s “always been a big Madden fan.”
But don’t get your hopes up for a Madden movie. It’s far more likely that we’re talking a more traditional video game adaptation.
In the meantime, Johnson is keeping busy. He’ll star in his own DC superhero film, Black Adam, later this year, and has teased that his classic DC character may even get to fight Superman at some point. He’s also voicing Krypto the Wonder Dog in the upcoming League of Super-Pets movie and is expected to return in Netflix’s Red Notice sequels.
