One of the many reasons to explore the expertly crafted world of The Last of Us: Part 1 is to find and collect everything that the game has secretly hidden away from you. Among the various collectibles that there are to find, safes are going to be the most difficult to discover and unlock. There are only four safes throughout the game and four corresponding unlock codes that you must find as well.
Finding the safes are important if you are looking to 100% complete the game as some of them contain missable collectibles. These safes also provide resources that you will need to upgrade your gear.
Outskirts
After Tess takes out the first clicker, head down the subway station until you find a runner feeding on a corpse. Take out the runner and go left into the store with a banner reading “Goldenbar”. Go around the counter and open the cash register to collect an artifact with a safe code.
To find the safe, exit the store and go straight from the door and take a left from the blue box. You will enter a waiting area with clickers and runners sprawling the area. To your right will be a bookstore with the name “Round Note”. Enter the bookstore and go around the counter to find the safe. There is another infected near the safe, so take him out quietly before proceeding to unlock the safe.
The combination to unlock the safe is 3-43-78.
Bill’s Town
Once you reach Bill’s Town and help Ellie across the fence. You will enter an open street with a lot of shops and houses to explore. You will come across a restaurant with a board that reads “Concord Eatery On Main”. Right next to the restaurant is a red pick-up truck and the locked safe is next to it.
However, to unlock the safe, you will need the unlock code, which can be found towards the end of the road, pinned to a fence.
You don’t need to collect the unlock code to unlock the safe and if you choose to skip the artifact, the code you will need is 5-17-21. Since you are in this area, you may also want to pick up the firefly pendant that is sitting on the roof of the white RV.
Pittsburgh
In the Hotel Lobby segment of the Pittsburgh chapter, Joel and Ellie enter the hotel through a window and land in the flooded lobby. Ahead of them are the demolished lobby stairs, blocking access to the next floor. To proceed, take a left from the stairs and go around the racks to pick up a ladder. Use the ladder to climb up to the elevator hallway.
Upon reaching the hallway, go right and cross over the demolished stairs. Some portion of the stairs is still attached to the wall, and by keeping left, you can easily cross over to the other side. At the far end of the hallway, you’ll find a double door and some briefcases. One of the open briefcases contains an artifact with the safe code.
Once you have the safe code, return to the hotel lobby and head towards the window through which you entered the building. Upon nearing the window, go left and around the reception desk to enter a small office that contains the safe.
The code to unlock the safe is 22-10-56. Unlocking this safe also rewards you with the shiv reinforcement training manual.
Suburbs
After you exit the sewers in the Suburb chapter with Henry and Sam, you will enter a residential area with many houses to explore. There is one house in particular you will want to check out, and it is the white house with red graffiti on the outer wall. The house is located towards the end of the street. Enter the house and go up to the third floor to collect a matchbook from the desk with the safe code on it.
The corresponding safe is located on the second floor in a room closest to the stairs. Head inside the room and look for the safe inside the closet.
If you ignore collecting the code and head straight for the safe, you can unlock it using the code 08-21-36.
