Newly appointed Australia Test captain Pat Cummins said that he will be looking to take a “collaborative approach” to leading the team. Cummins was announced as captain on Friday with former skipper Steve Smith as his vice-captain ahead of the Ashes.

The 28-year-old said that he will be looking to empower other players to own their role within the team. “I’m naturally quite a calm person. I’m quite positive. I’ll be leaning on everyone. I’m a big one for empowering individuals to own their role,” Cummins told the media shortly after the announcement.

“It’s going to be a real collaborative approach (to leadership). It might look a bit different from the outside compared to captain’s of the past, which is great,” said the fast bowler.

Cummins said that the announcement was an emotional moment for him and his family. “Mum and Dad were super excited, there were a few tears. It’s a really special time. Everyone is really happy and proud,” he said.

Cummins was among the youngest Australians of all time to make his Test debut when he played his first match as an 18-year-old in 2011. However, he faced a long absence from Test cricket after that due to injuries until he made his comeback into the longest format of the game in Australia’s tour of India in 2017. Since then, Cummins has been recognised among the best Test bowlers in the world, taking 164 wickets in 34 wickets at a strike rate of 47.1.

Cummins said that he won’t be looking to take any breaks from Test cricket to manage his workload since he is now captain in the format. “I very much doubt that I will rest from Test cricket. I have never rested from a game of Test cricket before, so I doubt that will start now,” he said.
