Super Mario Bros. Movie Premiere Date Brought Ahead By Two Days

The Super Mario Bros. Movie will hit theaters two days earlier than expected, with the movie now set to premiere on April 5 in the US and more than 60 other markets worldwide.

Up to now, Universal and Illumination’s Super Mario Bros. movie was scheduled to release in these markets on April 7, but that date has now moved up by two days. The animated feature will release in additional markets in late April and May, with Japan opening on April 28.

Before its new release date rolls around, The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be given the spotlight in a special Nintendo Direct taking place on March 9. The presentation will reveal the final trailer for the film, which will likely give us our best look yet at the CG-animated adventure.

So far, the film looks to be a celebration of everything Mario, with its brisk runtime packing in plenty of fun references for Nintendo fans, including Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros, the original live-action Mario series, and just about every franchise character you can think of.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic from a screenplay by Matthew Fogel, the plot will be familiar to those that have played the iconic platformer: A plumber named Mario travels through an underground labyrinth with his brother, Luigi, to defeat Bowser.

The film stars Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek, and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

We’ve already had detailed looks at these characters in various posters in the lead-up to the movie’s release —one showed everyone’s favorite Mushroom Kingdom residents, along with Bowser and Peach’s respective castles, while others spotlighted individual characters.
