Sudirman Cup: Sindhu & Co show fight in losing cause

By Express News Service

There’s something about PV Sindhu and crunch games. Recent performances tend to go out of the equation when Sindhu takes the court for big games. The fighting spirit and her ability to use her height and strength to manipulate the shuttle were visible on Sunday. But that was not enough.

With India trailing 0-2 against Chinese Taipei in the Sudirman Cup (World Team Championships), which kicked off on Sunday, it was Sindhu’s turn to enter the court for a women’s singles tie. She was up against Tai Tzu Ying, a shuttler who had seven consecutive wins over the Indian coming into the contest.

Against that backdrop, Sindhu showed a lot of courage but lost the tie 21-14, 18-21, 21-17.

Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lost 13-21, 21-17, 18-21 to Lee Yang and Ye Hong Wei in the men’s doubles match.

Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand beat Lee Chia Hsin and Teng Chun Hsun 21-15, 18-21, 13-21. Earlier, the mixed pair of Tanisha Crasto and K Sai Prateek and men’s singles specialist, HS Prannoy, had lost their respective ties as India lost 1-4.
