MUMBAI: Preparations for staging the forthcoming edition of the IPL in Maharashtra have begun in full swing.
On Wednesday afternoon, Aaditya Thackeray, who is the minister for tourism and environment in the state government, and Maharashtra guardian minister Eknath Shinde will hold a meeting with BCCI’s acting CEO Hemang Amin and key officials of the Mumbai Cricket Association regarding the arrangements for the IPL-2022, which will kick off on March 26.
The meeting will be held at the Sahyadri Guest House in Malabar Hill. The MCA will be represented by its president Vijay Patil, Milind Narvekar, PA to Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, and also the chairman of the Mumbai Cricket Association’s T20 governing council, and executive secretary CS Naik. Mumbai Police Commissioner Sanjay Pandey will also attend the meeting.
To ensure that the teams are not stuck in traffic snarls in Mumbai and reach the venues in time for their matches, the Maharashtra government has assured of a special “green channel” permission, like in the case of ambulances and VIP movement.
It’s also likely that 50% crowd capacity will be allowed in the stadiums during the league. “I hope, by the way, COVID-19 cases are decreasing day by day, we have a free (atmosphere). We hope that when IPL matches take place, at that time the atmosphere will be such that all people will be permitted to visit the stadiums. It will be a boost to players and it will be a good opportunity where people can come together. People have been sitting in homes for one-and-half to two years, we can hope (for that),” Maharashtra sports minister Sunil Kedar had told reporters recently.
Maharashtra will stage all the 70 matches of the IPL league stage, with Mumbai supposed to hold 55 matches across its three stadiums — Wankhede, Brabourne at the Cricket Club of India and the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. Wankhede and DY Patil will stage 20 matches each, while Brabourne and the MCA stadium will hold 15 matches each.
MCA to hold two big tournaments this month
With cricket now back in full flow, the Mumbai Cricket Association will launch two big tournaments this month. The MCA Corporate Trophy, which will see the participation of 112 teams, and the MCA Inter-Collegiate tournament for senior and junior college.
