Something going on at Delhi Capitals which is not out in public: Irfan Pathan on Shreyas Iyer’s non-retention

Irfan Pathan said Shreyas Iyer’s decision to go into the mega-auction pool for IPL 2022 may have got something to do with him not being retained as Delhi Capitals captain after he returned from injury in the second half of IPL 2021 in the UAE.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Delhi Capitals are set to retain Rishabh Pant, Axar Patel, Prithvi Shaw and Anrich Nortje
  • Shreyas Iyer has made himself available for the mega-auction in January 2022
  • Iyer has amassed 2375 runs from 87 matches for Delhi Capitals since making his IPL debut in 2015

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan feels Shreyas Iyer decided to make himself available for next year’s Indian Premier League mega-auction as he wants to look for a different challenge after spending 7 seasons at Delhi Capitals.

Fans of the franchise were surprised to see Shreyas Iyer’s name missing from the unofficial list of its four retained players – Rishabh Pant, Prithvi Shaw, Axar Patel and Anrich Nortje – doing the rounds on social media and in the cricketing fraternity although there has been no official statement from DC so far.

Pathan feels Iyer’s decision to go into the auction may have something to do with him not being retained as DC captain after he returned from an injury layoff in the second half of IPL 2021.

Iyer had missed the first part of IPL 2021 in India due to a shoulder injury so the team’s captaincy was handed over to Pant, who lead the side for the entire season even after Iyer came back.

“I think so (Shreyas Iyer might be looking for another challenge). He was leading the side really well, playing really well but suddenly when he came back after the injury he was not the captain.

“So that means there is something going on which is not out there in the public. Which means Rishabh Pant will continue as the captain and it’s a great opportunity for Shreyas Iyer. Just go out and maybe lead another franchise,” Pathan said on Star Sports.

Pathan, who played for the Delhi franchise from 2011 to 2013, also added that Iyer will add value to any franchise that he plays for in IPL 2022 and can even lead the team if given the opportunity.

“Shreyas Iyer has been scoring runs consistently in the middle order for Delhi Capitals in the last 3 seasons which is not easy at all.

“We have seen majority of the runs being scored by openers because they get more balls to face but if you bat in the middle order trying to finish the game and being a leader, you add value to your franchise.

“Shreyas Iyer, wherever he will go he will add a lot of value to the franchise and hopefully be able to lead the side as well,” Pathan said.
