School in Belthangady conducts online assembly – Times of India

MANGALURU: A government school in a remote village in Belthangady taluk is conducting its assembly online every morning, through the Google Meet platform. The idea is to give a feel of the school environment to children, who are now deprived of attending classes on campus, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Apart from online classes, teachers at the Government Higher Primary School, Perlabaipady, Belthangady taluk, experimented to conduct online assembly. It started a week ago and includes all activities held during the regular school assembly conducted on the premises. The activity has enthused students, who now eagerly wait for the online assembly session every morning. The initiative is thanks to the efforts of teachers Nalini Silvester and Devika.

“The idea of this online school assembly was to give students a feel of the school campus while being at home. Meanwhile, there are many students, especially those who have joined the class I, who have never attended any school assembly. Also, some of the younger students who have attended it, have forgotten about it,” said Nalini.

The school has close to 80 students studying from classes I to VII. It has only two teachers, headed by Nalini. The parents of the children work in the agriculture sector and some are also daily wage labourers. As many as 65 students have access to smartphones with the internet. “The enthusiasm is such that some of their login and wait for assembly for more than 30 minutes. Whereas, those who don’t have smartphones, rush to the homes of their colleagues nearby, who have logged in for the assembly,” said Nalini.

The school assembly is usually held from 10.30 am, for about 10-15 minutes. There will not be a session when classes are scheduled on the Chandana channel. Devaki said that students, on a rotation basis, start by singing Nadageethe, after which they will read the day’s news, carry out reading in different languages, speak about a book that a student has read, recite multiplication tables, conduct quizzes, and culminates with the singing of the national anthem.
