Sacrifice Fly Pushes Orioles Past Yankees in Extra Innings

Cedric Mullins delivered a winning sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, Trey Mancini had his first three-hit game since returning from colon cancer surgery, and the Baltimore Orioles beat the Yankees, 4-3, Thursday for a four-game series split.

Mancini had an R.B.I. single in the first and hit a tying solo homer in the sixth on a flat cutter from Jordan Montgomery, who shook off the initial sign from catcher Gary Sanchez. The 29-year-old Mancini had his first back-to-back multi-hit games since Sept. 23-24, 2019. Mancini missed the 2020 season while being treated for cancer.

Austin Hays put the Orioles ahead by 3-2 in the eighth with an R.B.I. double off Darren O’Day, and Cedric Mullins scored from first as center fielder Aaron Hicks had trouble getting the ball out of his glove.

Pinch-hitter Mike Ford, batting for Clint Frazier, walked against Cesar Valdez leading off the ninth and Gleyber Torres fouled off a pair of pitches, then drove the third straight changeup to left-center for a tying ground-rule double. D.J. LeMahieu was stranded at third when Gio Urshela lined out.

Pat Valaika sacrificed off Jonathan Loaisiga (2-1) leading off the 10th, moving automatic runner Ramon Urías to third. Mullins flied to center, and Valaika easily scored.

Tanner Scott (1-2) pitched a scoreless 10th for the Orioles, who have won three of last five and improved to 4-10 at home.

The Yankees went 3 for 14 with runners in scoring position and finished a 5-3 trip that started in Cleveland and dropped into a last-place tie with Baltimore in the A.L. East at 11-14.

Rougned Odor hit a two-run single in the fifth off Jorge Lopez, who gave up four hits in four-plus innings.

Montgomery allowed six hits in five innings.

Harper ‘Feels Good’ After Scary Incident

The Phillies star Bryce Harper said he feels fine after being hit in the face by a 96.9 mile-per-hour fastball Wednesday night, forcing him from Philadelphia’s game against St. Louis.

“Everything feels good,” Harper said in a video he posted to Instagram. He said he got a CT scan and other testing and “Everything came back good.”

Harper was drilled in the left cheek by left-handed reliever Genesis Cabrera’s first pitch in the sixth inning. Harper picked himself up and walked off the field, blood dripping from a cut on the side of his nose.

He appeared to have only minor swelling and bruising in the video he sent to social media.

“Face is still there, so we’re all good,” he said.

Cabrera, through translator Antonio Mujica, expressed remorse for his pitching.

“I’m very sorry for Bryce Harper,” Cabrera said. “I want to again to apologize to all of the action that happened, especially to Harper. I really wish him the best and I hope he has a speedy recovery. The game got away from me. I’m really sorry for everything that happened. It was not intentional.”

Under the three-batter minimum rule for relievers, Cabrera had to stay in.

St. Louis Manager Mike Shildt said he would have pulled Cabrera if he could have.

“It was a tie game. It was right in his spot,” Shildt said. “It was completely unfortunate the ball got away from him. Our prayers are with Bryce Harper and we hope he’s OK.

“It’s a failure of the three-batter minimum. Completely, absolutely no doubt. You’re talking about an aggressive young pitcher throwing to one of the superstars of this game. Clearly, he felt terrible. Everybody knows it was completely unintentional.”
