RVshare, the largest community for RV owners and renters, recently unveiled their 2023 Travel Report that indicates another blockbuster year for travel. As work flexibility continues to evolve and become a permanent lifestyle for many, RVshare is predicting it will ultimately affect the way Americans approach travel this year.
RVshare insights highlight that remote employees are leaning heavily into the “remote” aspect of their jobs this year, and are choosing to take work on-the-go, especially in an RV. RVshare describes “Hush Trips” as a remote employee who continues to work while traveling on-the-go and remains discreet about their whereabouts. So far, the term has gained traction with Forbes calling it the “newest travel trend in 2023”.
According to RVshare.com:
- 56% of all working adults say that they’re very or extremely likely to partake in a “Hush Trip” this year
- In fact, 26% of both Gen X and Millennials, of whom nearly all have remote jobs, claim to already have one planned for 2023.
- RV travel is entering the mainstream as well, with Gen X and Millennials among the top demographics to take a road trip or vacation in the next 12 months.
The travel industry is continuing to evolve and RV travel, which is in the top 3 accommodation preferences for half of Americans, is one of the easiest ways for employees to enjoy a nomadic work life; primarily because of the amenities and flexibility it offers. For those employees who are planning to travel discreetly this year, a few tips include:
- When taking an RV road trip, look into campgrounds or vacation rentals that have strong WiFi connectivity. Consider also looking into Starlink or purchasing a signal booster or skyroam unit.
- When taking calls, consider using a generic Zoom background to maintain some discretion of your whereabouts.
- Schedule travel time, flying or drive, during off times or days to not conflict with work hours.
- Keep social media posts on your travels to a minimum.
Travel Motivations Change:
Following the last few years of unpredictability, Americans are evenly split on their travel plans for the year. Half of Americans are wanting to keep things simple due to last years travel-related frustrations, while the other are planning to finally plan a “bucket list” trip. Regardless, RVshare insights reveal that nearly 60% of travelers are still interested in relaxing and unwinding, followed by other important factors:
- 50% are interested in spending quality time with family.
- 47% are seeking to enjoy nature and wildlife.
- 49% are prioritizing the importance of enjoying peace and quiet.
Will the “Hush Trip” trend continue? The answer will likely depend on how employers (who get wind of this trend) react. With the pandemic having employee rethink their priorities and emphasizing the importance of a good work-life balance, employers are continuing to evaluate the landscape and manage expectations. Skift predicts that the increased flexibility of remote workers may lead to more defined policies and work culture ideologies.
