Rust: What To Know About Keycards

Players of PvP games like Fortnite, Rust, and Call Of Duty Warzone may have differing opinions on the best way to stay alive, but they will all agree on one thing: Obtaining high tier loot gives you the best chance to do so. For those who aren’t keen on raiding or tackling some of the tough in-game events, Rust’s addition of the color-coded keycards and their accompanying puzzles found around the map offer yet another method of gaining rare resources. The keycards do not require you to defeat an NPC first to get their loot, but you should always prepare to encounter other players in the process.

The keycards are colored green, blue, or red, and will unlock loot-filled rooms of the same color at different monuments. The green keycards are the easiest to obtain, then blue, with red being the most difficult but also most rewarding. Keycards respawn in their locations after roughly 30 minutes. The green and blue ones can be used four times each before they break, while the red ones will break after two uses. While each card can be traded at the bandit camp for scrap, the loot they lead to far more valuable and worth the search.

Green Keycards

The green keycards are the most commonly available. They open locked green doors, and these contain normal crates with resources, weapons, and the important blue keycard. The green cards spawn in locations at certain monuments. Additionally, they will sometimes drop from the Military Tunnel and roaming scientist NPCs. The loot green crates offer is valuable early in a run, but really serves as a step towards something greater.

Green Keycard Locations

  • Gas Station: Break the wooden boards on the wall to get into the office room. The keycard is on the desk.
  • Junkyard: On the desk in the office room on top of the bridge.
  • Lighthouse: In the bottom of the Lighthouse in the office room, the green keycard is found on the desk.
  • Supermarket: In the smaller attached building, on the desk in the office.
  • Underwater Labs: There is no specific location, since the layout is randomly generated, but it can usually be found on desks or the floor. Other times, it will be behind a blue keycard door on the desk depending on the lab’s layout.
  • Small Oil Rig: On the last level inside the locked blue door on the desk.
  • Large Oil Rig: Unlock the green locked door and there is a green keycard laying on the desk.

Scientist NPCs patrol the Small Oil Rig area, so be on alert.

Blue Keycards

The blue keycards are mainly found behind green locked doors at monuments. To complete the puzzle and unlock the green door in this brutal survival title, you will need to have an electric fuse to power the switch and then turn the switch on, so be sure to carry one with you.

The blue keycard is special in that it is the only keycard that can be purchased for 100 scrap at the outpost. The blue keycards unlock blue locked doors, which not only contain more crates with better loot than the green ones, but also the red keycard.

Additionally, there is a 20% chance to obtain a blue keycard when gutting salmon, catfish, orange roughy, and small shark.

Blue Keycard Locations

  • Satellite: Find the small red shed with a fusebox near the satellite dish, insert the electric fuse, go outside and turn on the switch on the back of the shed. Head to the green locked door, use the green keycard to unlock it, and the blue keycard is inside on the desk.
  • Harbor: The blue keycard can be in two different locations depending on which Harbor layout you are dealing with:

  1. Small layout: In the two-story container building, insert a fuse inside the box on the first floor, go outside and up the stairs to use your green keycard on the locked door and the blue keycard will be on the desk to the left.
  2. Large layout: Go to the small shed near the center of the monument, insert a fuse in the box inside, flip the switch on the right outside the door, then open the green locked door. The blue keycard is on the desk inside.

  • Sewer Branch: Enter a red aluminum power building, use a fuse and flip the switch. Head underground and use the green keycard on the door, then head towards the center of the sewer and up the stairs. The blue keycard is on the desk.

Red Keycards

Red keycards can only be found behind blue locked doors. They open the red locked doors that contain normal crates, military crates, and also elite crates, offering some of the very best loot (a crucial concern in titles like Fortnite too) in all of Rust. While it can be a chore working your way to a red keycard, then, it will pay off in the long run. Just like when opening the green and blue doors, you will need electric fuses and a combination of green, blue, and red keycards to complete the puzzle so you can unlock the red locked doors.

Where To Use The Red Keycard

  • Launch Site: Use a green keycard in the building to the left of the three grain silos, enter and insert fuse in box and turn on the switch. Head to the office building that has two trucks carrying two blue cargo crates outside, go inside and insert an electric fuse, then go back outside and use the red keycard on the red locked door on the large building next door with a silo next to it. Head to the very top (while avoiding the holes in the stairs) and the loot crates will be on the roof. To get out, go back down to Floor 0, enter the Auxilary Power room, and turn on the switch. Go back through the door, enter the first room on your left, and open the red locked door with your red keycard.
  • Military Tunnels: Insert an electric fuse in the box inside the Armory in the first room on the right, then activate the switch. This will start a timer. Head back outside and enter the mines, using the green keycard on the locked door. Kill the scientist inside, then turn on the switch and exit through the side door that leads into a tunnel that is heavily guarded by scientists. You will need to make it all the way to the laboratory door and enter it with your blue keycard. Open the red locked door, defeat your foes, and the crates are yours to loot.
  • Small Oil Rig: On level four, locate the Admin building under the helipad. Use a blue keycard on the door, go inside and use the red keycard on the locked door at the back of the room.
  • Large Oil Rig: On level six, find the small white building and unlocks its door with your red keycard.
  • Underwater Labs: The labs are randomly generated, but you will need electric fuses, and a combination of green, blue, and red keycards to complete these puzzles. Ensure you’re stocked up on electric fuses (and each keycard of course) and be prepared to take out scientists.
